VitaMuffin Review

I have been scouring the grocery store for weeks looking for these little chocolate muffins – unsuccessfully, until last week.  My local Hannaford now stocks them in the organic freezer section near the Ezekiel bread (which I’m also dying to try).

I first heard about VitaMuffins from Hungry girlShe just raves about them.  She even has a game on her site called “Whack-a-Snack” that give you a 5% off coupon code at Vitalicious.com.  They also receive a lot of hype on the Weight Watcher Boards due to the fact that most of varieties are only 1 point.  This is big news in the dieting world.  Guilt free, good-for-you chocolate.  Vitalicious even claims they are better for you than eating an apple!

The charts don’t lie.  50% of most of your daily vitamins!  The 2oz Deep Chocolate variety that I bought even had 6 grams of fiber!  Wow!

But how do they taste?

Mostly good.  I wouldn’t expect fireworks in your mouth, but they were pretty tasty.  The variety that I bought comes frozen.  Vitalicious.com recommends that you:

Thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes or remove them from their package and defrost for 10-15 seconds in the microwave.

I didn’t do that the first time, so they were a little dry and well, frozen.  But the second time I allowed them to thaw for a while and they were much better.

Would I buy them again?

Honestly, i’m not sure.  They were a great snack for 1pt, but they were also very pricey – $4.99 for a 4-pack (yikes, right?).   I may try their vitamuffin mix which is more versital.  Roni over at Weight Watchen had a contest a few months back using VitaMix.  She got some really great responses including:  Raspberry Chocolate Waffle Cups, and my favorite VitaBrownie Pizza

What do you think?  I want to hear your opinions on VitaMuffins!

  1. lol I too have been looking everywhere for these with no success. After your review I am wondering if maybe I should just not worry about it.

  2. It’s nice to see a good review of these – people seem to be obsessed with them because hey, they’re only 100 calories and they’re MUFFINS, but they are expensive… And if they’re not amazing, I don’t want to buy them. I actually made a super healthy low-cal batch of muffins by putting in a ton of apples and using applesauce. They were fantastic and moist and only about 80 calories apiece. Okay, they didn’t have 50% of all those vitamins, but they were really good. The recipe is on my site if you want it.

  3. Hi Amanda,

Thanks for stopping by my site, I have had you linked for awhile now since a fellow WW locally tipped me off. You are truly an inspiration with your meal idea’s, I am so boring by comparison!

I have wondered about these VItamuffins after HG’s endorsement, but they’re not stocked anywhere here and at that price they’re a little steep!

I’m not sure the product justifies the cost. I’m always jazzed about a one point snack but I can get a 100 calorie cinnamon streusel coffee cake snack from Hostess for way less money. They have 5 grams of fiber, they satisfy my muffin urges and they’re relatively cheap. I’ve tried Vita Muffins and Vita brownies. Fairly tasty but again – 4 for $5 is out of my budget.

  5. Nicole – I wouldn’t worry about the muffins…I let you know how the mix turns out. I really want to try that pizza!

Magpie – do share your recipe for these amazing muffins! I’m waiting… 🙂 Most of us take a multivitamin anyway, right? Who needs all those vitamins in a muffin? I don’t expect that much from them.

Sarah – I love your site as well! Where in England are you from? My husband travels over there a couple times a year. I have yet to go with him (my airfare is expensive)….maybe next time.

Mrs O. – I haven’t tried those 100 calorie muffins yet. The cinnamon ones look good, but I wouldn’t bother with the banana one.

  6. Oh man, I’ve wanted to try these muffins forever, but I can NOT find them! I’ve checked everywhere with no luck. I remember seeing them back in NY so I’ll have to get them when I go home this summer. They are a bit expensive so I’d like to get the mix as well. While pretty darn healthy and low in calories, I feel like I still might prefer Trader Joe’s muffins. The muffins have 2 to 2 1/2 times the calories but probably 2 to 3 times the size. They also may have better nutrition info than vitamuffins, except for the vitamins themselves.

I love your blog. I’m also doing WW. If you go to
http://www.vitalicious.com you can actually order the vita muffin mix for 5.99 a bag. I ordered a bag of each flavor, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I also ordered a silicon pan for baking muffin tops from them. They have Blueberry Bran, Chocolate Brownie, Deep Chocolate and Banana Nut. I’m so excited to be able to eat chocolate for 1 point!

  8. YOU HAVE TO TOAST THEM!!!!! Omg they are amaazing toasted! I actually spread mine with whipped cottage cheese once I slice them in half and then toast them 🙂 Or plainly toasted too! Yum yum yum!

(PS) Did you/anyone else find that the blueberry bran ones grow moldy in like a day??? Ewwwww.

Love your blog as always 🙂 Have a lovely Sunday!

  9. Just saw that you like these muffins too! The first time I had them I ordered a variety pack from the company directly. My favorite were the chocolate tops. I liked it much more than the muffin.

Hmm… toasted. Gotta try that if I find them at the store. The site says there are 2 stores near me that carry them. I gotta hit them on the way home one of these days.

  10. I really wanted to try them, but they do come at a high price. They did have a special at Safeway, which is the only location I was able to find them, for 2 at $7. So that would be $3.50 per box. But, you only get four small muffins in them, and so it wasn’t that great to me.

I am trying to find a way to make my own double chocolate ooozzzy gooozzy goodness with applesauce and whole wheat flour so that it would be equally as healthy and not cost as much. Plus, baking can be fun… -lol- Call me a thrifty spender!

  11. I work at vitalicious so maybe I can add something to this thread. The products need to be frozen when they arrive because they are all natural & contain no artificial preservatives (you can re-freeze if needed). This will prevent molding. We are in 8000 stores nationally (freezer sections) so if you are having trouble finding a store you can email us from our website & we’ll help find one for you. Take advantage of our customer service. My personal preference is to buy the mixes (although I typically don’t bake) because they are easy to make- just 3 ingredients, they taste better freshly baked, the cost per VitaMuffin is nearly 50% less & you can be creative with your flavors. Lastly, many people don’t know that most 100 calorie products are 1 oz., VitaMuffins & tops are 2 oz. which means you are actually getting more product by weight in comparision (2x more per serving) & you’ll feel more full after eating. We’re hoping the additional benefits of the product will outwiegh the slightly higher cost. I hope I was able to add some insight to our products.

Haven’t tried them yet.. been looking all over for them. But if Hungry Girl says they are great that is enough for me.. She has the same ‘ taste’ I do so I follow her recommendations regularly and have never been disappointed. The only thing I would like to see in them is a little higher protein count. That way when you eat your 100 cal snack .. you feel full for a lot longer.. The fiber is fine but the protein is what makes it ‘ stick’ with you longer. I just ordered some from the website. They are having a buy one get one special from Hungry girl.. Can’t wait to get mine. That you get the coupon code from Hungry girl website.

I bought many of the chocolate tops and muffins online…(I wasn’t thinking about how much room in my freezer this would take up..it was a lot).

My husband and I have been enjoying them as a snack and as part of our breakfast for a few weeks….but last night, as I was snacking on one I realized it tasted like vegetables, or vitamins, or something other than chocolate.

    I threw it out.

But this morning I tried a different flavor and same thing.

They’ve been frozen the whole time so I don’t know if it’s them or if it’s me.

I probably won’t buy them again.

I think they are great. I have the cranberry or blueberry for breakfast like a cookie with coffee (pop them in the toaster first) and sometimes I have the brownie or choc muffin as a snack in the afternoon with coffee. I have lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks (along with exercise). I love them and they are worth the price!
